VOLITILITY CONTINUES: APRIL CUTS RISE 38% OVER MARCH; YTD DOWN 50%. AI LEADS REASONS FOR SECOND MONTH IN A ROW

CHICAGO, May 7, 2026 – U.S.-based employers announced 83,387 job cuts in April, up 38% from the 60,620 job cuts recorded in March. It is down 21% from the 105,441 cuts announced during the same month last year, according to a report released Thursday from global outplacement and executive coaching firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

AI just became the leading reason companies are cutting jobs.

Not restructuring. Not cost-cutting. Not market conditions.

Artificial Intelligence.

The Challenger Report dropped this week and buried in the data is a number that should stop every job seeker cold: 21,490 layoffs in April alone were directly attributed to AI. That is 26% of all cuts in a single month.

And here is the part nobody is talking about.

The tech sector, the industry building these AI tools, is also leading all industries in layoffs. They announced 33,361 cuts in April. Over 85,000 so far this year.

The people creating the technology are being replaced by it.

This is not a future scenario. This is happening right now, in real time, to real people who thought their skills were safe.

What does this mean if you are job searching?

It means the old playbook is dead. You cannot just apply and wait. You cannot assume silence means they are still reviewing. Companies are restructuring faster than their HR departments can send rejection emails.

The average job seeker applies to dozens of roles and hears back from maybe 10%. The rest just disappear into the void. No update. No closure. Just silence while you wonder if you should follow up or move on.

I went through this myself when I was laid off. Spent months in that limbo, tracking applications in spreadsheets that got messier by the week, never knowing which companies had actually rejected me versus which just never bothered to respond.

So I built ghoster.app to fix it. A free job tracker that helps you see exactly where every application stands so you are never left guessing.

Because in a market where AI is eliminating roles faster than companies can post new ones, the last thing you need is to waste time chasing opportunities that already closed.

The job market is shifting underneath us. The only way to stay ahead is to stay organized.

What is the longest you have waited for a response from a company before realizing they ghosted you?
